what am I missing here

From: mr_elsworth_toohey (mr_elsworth_toohey@yahoo.com) | Date: 2003-12-30 16:49:39 UTC
I found the following "warning" while looking through clues and
didn't understand the implications.

WARNING:
PLEASE DO NOT search for my boxes if you intend to enter them into
ANY database. I don't want to pull boxes/clues because someone feels
they know better- I'm sharing myself with those who wish to play the
game the way it was intended. Don't ruin it for everyone because of
your own needs. I'D ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU DIRECTLY-I've
met the nicest people that way! Enjoy! :o)

What databases? and why would this be offensive? and what is
the "intended way" to play the game? What is it that is "ruining it
for everyone"?

Being rather new to this I was dumbstruck by this. Have I
inadvertantly been doing something offensive and ruining it for
everyone? Are there letterboxing police out there somewhere?

There was (And still is at times) a large debate about 'other' databases
other than the 'official' one at the www.letterboxing.org site. There are
many arguments about the pros and the cons, so here's a good point to
remember.....

IF it's not your box, don't put it in any other database anywhere. Only the
placer of a box should put the box in a database.

Make any status reports to the owner of the box, either through the 'Contact
the Placer' at the main website, or via direct email if they put that in the
letterbox and or here, to this mailing list.

Those simple guidelines should make everyone happy.

And, unless you have been adding boxes you found to a database elsewhere,
then you've not been doing anything wrong at all.

Just my humble 2 cents worth.

I have been proudly maintaining a list of the boxes I've placed and
found on my own Web site.

Just so everyone knows, I tried to send a message to this person off list and
their email address is not valid....I think this may be another attempt by a
certain individual who thinks he's funny and who really enjoys causing anger
and bad feelings to start riling everyone up again (remember the Smithsonian
archive hoax and the artificial Reverend Hoyden?)

If this is not this person....well, all I can say is if you "cry wolf" too
many times, eventually you will get eaten by wolf!

Whoever sent this email, has made sure this email address cannot receive
return mail. So I would take this "innocent" question with a grain of salt, lest
we all start this excruciating process again...

Respectfully,
-Kim (Rustypuff)

P.S.
This is the returned mail I got....

Careful, you may be casting aspersions upon an innocent.
It would be best to assume the best of the inquiring party.
I think one can sign up to list but not activate their free yahoo e-
mail account. Which is probably what Twohey did.

I've come across that warning about not listing someone's boxes in a
database before as well - but I've never looked for those boxes (not
in my area - they're too north of me). When I do, I'll probably keep
it to myself.

I do hope that is the case...

If so, I do apologize.

I fear I am an incorrigible cynic, and the bounced message just smacked of
those familiar antics.
